About us

Mapping Housing Rorts is a collective of people with lived experience of Tasmania’s housing crisis, and their allies. We aim to:

COERCE. Asking governments to fix the problem, when many in power benefit from housing rorts, is a dead end. Housing stress and homelessness are getting worse. Pressure needs to be exerted in different ways, starting with exposing the nature and the scale of the housing issues faced by ordinary people.

EXPOSE. Dodgy rentals, vacant houses, and mega-landlords contribute to housing stress, social exclusion, and growing inequity. Exposing those ripping off ordinary people and rorting the housing system puts pressure on individuals and society to fix basic problems. This includes bringing rentals up to legal standards and renting out vacant homes.

EMPOWER. Maps are a powerful way of telling stories about people’s experiences and lives. Visual story telling can empower people experiencing housing stress and build capacity for collective action, such as housing mutual aid.
